Florida, a state so big that it needs a full day to drive from end to end, has very few culinary claims to fame. Sure, there is the Cuban sandwich that both https://www.jasonsdeli.com/menu claim responsibility for popularizing in America, but apart from that, it is pretty barren. You’re not going to find a famed plate of pasta in Pensacola, and nobody visits Fort Lauderdale for the fried chicken.
There is one food item, however, that Florida does a lot better than every other state: The food store sub. But not just any grocery store is going to do — these sandwiches has to be purchased from Publix, the beloved supermarket chain headquartered in the town of Lakeland. While a sub is actually a type of sandwich you will get virtually anywhere in the world, Floridians love the Publix sub around their college football teams, Pitbull, and air conditioner during a particularly humid summer. Probably the most fervent of sub eaters actually have a nickname for his or her favorite sandwich: “the Pub Sub.”
“Publix was my family’s supermarket associated with preference being raised in Miami,” says Justin Taylor, a Florida-raised writer who always creates a stop at one of the state’s nearly 800 stores when he goes back to go to his in-laws in Pensacola and grandparents in Boynton Beach. Although I didn’t grow up with Taylor or in Florida (I lived there briefly in my 20s), he’s a part of a network of people who I find myself exchanging pictures of my personal favorite Pub Subs with frequently, like we’re grandparents gushing about grandkids or war buddies speaking about the old days. “Lately I’ve taken to picking one up on my way to the airport when I’m leaving so I have something good to enjoy [on the] plane,” Taylor says.
Taylor isn’t alone in the obsession. Not only do Publix subs get their own Facebook page, particular varieties also provide their own dedicated fan pages. There is also a nearly four-minute-long song created in the sub’s honor which will likely find yourself in trouble in your head. And when you will still aren’t convinced, just click on among the many articles with headlines like “The Publix Sub Is Without Doubt the most effective Sandwich in the united states.”
In accordance with Arielle Castillo, a reporter for Major League Soccer as well as a native Floridian, the subs can also be quite nostalgic. “Yes, they’re good sandwiches, but they’re even the sandwiches you’d get before a beach day, or while skipping senior high school or anything,” she says. “There’s something Proustian about the subject.”
So what exactly makes these supermarket subs so excellent? Like a lot of the culture as well as the residents in Florida, the sub (or hero, or grinder, or whatever you decide to decided to refer to it as) migrated down south through the east coast. There exists nothing regarding a sub from Publix that will cause you to immediately think of palm trees and pink flamingos; you can find no ingredients that are unique for the Sunshine State.
You will get the home deli meat, or pay a little more and obtain cuts from the Ny-based Boar’s Head. The bread, while baked in-house, is just a good version of crusty white sub bread. The vegetables, all chopped xgzfua through the grocer’s produce aisle, can be your standard gamut of options that can also be found at any Subway: lettuce, tomato, cucumbers, green peppers, onions, black olives.
The sandwich is not fancy, but which is precisely the appeal. As opposed to being showy, they may be always high-quality and reliable. The ingredients will always be fresh and “way better compared to they should be in a supermarket,” says Castillo. Whichever location you go to, the end result is actually a large and filling sandwich cheaper than a $10 bill typically.
It’s also highly customizable. Desire a warm turkey sandwich with provolone, Jasons Deli menu 2020, as well as a smattering of olives? You may have that. Need it on whole wheat grains and stacked with tomatoes and jalapeos? That can happen, too. And in case you are feeling a little adventurous there will always be the subs created in honor from the four local NFL teams such as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sub which comes topped with plantain chips and guacamole. Most people, however, according to Maria Brous, Publix’s director of media and community relations, choose the chicken tender sub — an alternative you certainly will not find at Subway.
